Classic Beef & Cheese Lasagna

For the Meat Sauce:

1 pound ground beef

1 small onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes

2 tablespoons tomato paste

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

Salt and pepper to taste

1 tablespoon olive oil

½ cup water

For the Cheese Mixture:

15 ounces ricotta cheese

1 large egg

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (divided)

½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 teaspoon dried parsley

Salt and pepper to taste

For Assembly:

12-15 lasagna noodles (oven-ready or boiled as per package instructions)

Additional mozzarella and Parmesan for topping

Instructions
 

Prepare the Meat Sauce:

    - In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.

      - Add minced garlic and ground beef to the skillet. Cook until the beef is browned. Drain excess fat if necessary.

        - Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, pepper, and water. Reduce heat to low and let simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

          Prepare the Cheese Mixture:

            - In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, 1 cup of mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, egg, parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix until well blended.

              Assemble the Lasagna:

                - Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

                  - In a 9x13 inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom. Place a layer of lasagna noodles on top.

                    - Spread a portion of the cheese mixture over the noodles, followed by another layer of meat sauce. Repeat these layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of noodles topped with meat sauce.

                      - Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese and additional Parmesan cheese on top.

                        Bake:

                          - Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil (to prevent sticking, spray foil with cooking spray).

                            - Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

                              Serve:

                                - Let the lasagna rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing. Serve warm and enjoy!
