Instructions

Prepare the crust and crumble:

    - In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt.

      - Add the chilled cubed butter and mix using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

        - Stir in the beaten egg until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into two equal portions. Press one portion into the bottom of a greased 9x9-inch baking pan to form the crust.

          Make the apple filling:

            - In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, cornstarch, and vanilla extract. Toss well to coat the apples evenly.

              Assemble the bars:

                - Pour the apple mixture evenly over the crust in the baking pan. Crumble the remaining dough over the top of the apples to create a rustic topping.

                  Bake the bars:

                    - Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the apple pie bars in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbly.

                      Cool and drizzle with caramel:

                        - Once baked, remove the pan from the oven and allow the bars to cool in the pan for at least 15 minutes.

                          - Drizzle the cooled bars with caramel sauce, slice into squares, and enjoy!
